Our favorite time of the day is early morning, just around 6 a.m., on the sands of Manhattan Beach, by the Pier, with low tide providing ample walking space on the hard sand. 

At that hour, the lights are still on at the Pier, and it's just us, a few joggers, some surfers, and a whole lot of birds running in and out of the water, and flying together, en masse.
