Brides and grooms creating free online websites pre-wedding only makes sense. Couples need a place to keep family, friends and the bridal party up to date on the latest wedding details, without having to send out mass e-mails or make mass phone calls. So several website operators have popped up offering either "free" ad-supported websites or "free trial," come-ons that expire after a week or so, and ask for subscriptions to keep them going.
So we decided to take a look at the truly free sites, and offer our impressions.
Our favorite is Great Britain based Freewebs. Yes, there are a lot of ads, but the templates are quite attractive, and the set-up was easy and painless. We created a multi-page (Home, Weddings, Honeymoons, Los Angeles Banquet Rooms and Engagements) website in minutes, added pictures effortlessly. All you have to do is add text and photos. Our Freewebs site is pictured above. Click on the link to check it out.
The Knot is synoonomous with the Web and weddings, the number one online destination for brides to plan for their registries, banquet rooms, ring selections, photographers and anything and everything. The Knot offers free websites with membership (which is also no cost) but plan on spending a good deal of time putting the page together. The Knot wants you to input details about the bride and groom, date, reception and registry, which is all fine and well, but all you end up with is a page, not a site. On the plus side, The Knot offers cool communication tools, like automatically alerting your friends when you put new details on the page and a way for guests to RSVP online. eWedding, which came up first when we searched for "free wedding websites," in Google and Yahoo, had us up and running with our site within seconds. We registered, typed in the names of the bride and groom and date, and that was it. If we felt like putting in a lot of work with additional data, we had that option. (You'll notice in the above screen shot that there are 20 pages to the website, awaiting your input.) Those with less time on their hands can simply upload a photo, type in a greeting and return later, when they're feeling more ambitious. eWedding is our second favorite, after Freewebs.
Other free wedding websites worth checking out: Tripod, Wedding Channel, Apple's iWeb and Google's Blogger.
